Boiler playing up? Repair or replace
A repair is usually the cheaper fix, but not always the smarter one. Here's how we decide, honestly, whether your boiler is worth mending.
When a boiler breaks down, the first question is always the same: is it worth fixing, or throwing good money after bad? We repair wherever it makes economic sense, but there's a point where a replacement is the better decision.
When a repair makes sense
If your boiler is under about eight years old, in good condition, and the fault is a common, affordable part, a repair is almost always the right call. Modern boilers are reliable, and one failed component doesn't mean the whole unit is finished.
When replacement wins
Beyond a certain age, parts get harder to find and more expensive, and efficiency drops off. If you're facing a big repair bill on an older boiler that's already costing you in gas, putting that money towards a new, efficient boiler with a long warranty often works out cheaper within a few years.
