Radiators cold at the bottom? That's sludge, here's the fix

Hold your hand against the radiator: hot at the top, stone cold across the bottom middle. If that sounds familiar, you haven't got an air problem, you've got a sludge problem. It's one of the most common things we see across South Hampshire, and it quietly makes your heating slower, colder and more expensive.

Cold at the top vs cold at the bottom

They look similar but mean opposite things:

- Cold at the top = trapped air. Bleeding the radiator fixes it, key in the vent, let the air hiss out until water appears, done. (Check your boiler pressure afterwards.) - Cold at the bottom and middle = sludge. Bleeding does nothing, because the problem isn't air, it's a layer of black magnetic mud sitting where the hot water should flow.

What sludge actually is

Over years, the steel inside radiators corrodes and sheds tiny particles of rust into the system water. That black sediment, engineers call it magnetite, settles at the bottom of radiators, clogs pipework, and grinds away at your boiler's pump and heat exchanger. Sludge is the number one killer of boilers, old and new.

Signs it's building up: radiators with cold patches, some rooms never getting warm, kettling or banging noises from the boiler, dirty brown water when you bleed a radiator, and repeat pump failures.

What a powerflush does

A powerflush connects a machine to your heating system that pumps cleaning chemicals through at high flow, radiator by radiator, dislodging the sludge and flushing it out until the water runs clean. Done properly it takes the best part of a day, and it finishes with an inhibitor chemical that slows future corrosion, plus, ideally, a magnetic filter fitted to catch whatever forms next.

The difference is usually obvious the same evening: radiators that heat evenly all the way down, rooms that warm up quicker, and a quieter boiler.

Is it always worth it?

Honestly, not always. If one radiator is slightly cool, removing and hosing that single radiator through outside may be all it needs. And if the system is very old and the radiators are corroding through, the money is sometimes better put towards new radiators than cleaning old ones. If you're getting a new boiler, though, a proper flush first is essential, fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system voids most warranties and wrecks the heat exchanger.
