Get your heating winter-ready: a simple checklist
A few small checks before the cold sets in can save you a breakdown on the coldest night of the year. Our quick autumn checklist.
The busiest day of our year is the first properly cold one, when every boiler that's been sitting idle since spring gets asked to work hard, and some don't cope. A little preparation goes a long way.
Fire it up early
Turn your heating on for half an hour before you actually need it, ideally in early autumn. If it's noisy, slow to warm up, or throwing an error code, it's far better to find out in September than on a freezing night in December.
Check pressure and radiators
Glance at the boiler pressure gauge; around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold is normal. Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top, and note any that are cold at the bottom, that's sludge, and worth sorting before winter.
Book the service you keep meaning to
An annual service catches the small faults that turn into breakdowns, and keeps your warranty valid. Autumn is the ideal time, before diaries fill up.
